So one would insert a limiter to help catch the loudest parts of the vocal just before the signal goes into the red, distorts and sound like shit. If I had a vocal where it had a wide dynamic range (the difference between the quietest parts and the loudest parts), it’s difficult to get the vocals on the same dynamics on the mixing. SO, please read this example below to clear things out: I will give you an example of what a limiter can do because the ideology may not be clear and can be quite confusing because it works with the compressor. (But the series is not finished yet as we explore more about vocal engineering). SO, as you may have guessed it, this is the last step (IN THEORY) when mixing a vocal. Reason is, the limiter is easier to understand when you know the compressor.
Additionally, it is also great to read that before this article. If you are unfamiliar with GAIN and REDUCTION, I encourage you to read last week’s article on LEARNING VOCAL ENGINEERING: COMPRESSION because it will give you a better understanding of the two and more. What it does is it can control the gain/reduction of the vocal. Limiters are known as a sort of “corrector” device in a vocal. Generally, limiters are only used during the end of recording and mixing a vocal, as compressors are usually used to control the audio’s dynamics.
